Bright Sunshine and light winds greeted the thirty competitors , for the
South Shields Sailing Club Topper open meeting held on the 13th May 2000.
With no discards in force, close and exciting racing was assured for all
In race one the leader after the first lap was Jackie Wilson from Sunderland
Yacht Club. After the second lap Adam Cockerill from Emsworth Slipper S. C.
had gained first lead . The final lap saw North East Sailor of the year
Steven Wilson take the lead for a thrilling finish.
Race two began with a general recall, which saw them get away at the second
attempt. Andy Brooks from Elton SC sailed away from the rest of the fleet,
but a mistake at the fourth mark let Jackie Wilson into first place. Brooks
fought back to regain the lead in the final leg winning by half a boats
The Final race in the afternoon saw the wind strengthen but constantly
varying direction, setting Race Officer Bruce Robinson a challenging task.
With the race off to a clean start Stephen Wilson was the first to emerge
from the pack and this was the way it stayed until the finish. Overall
victory went to Stephen with sister Jackie in second place and Michael
Thomson from Emsworth Slipper SC third overall. Best placed South Shields
Sailor was Fay English.
